Street Lighting

Street Light Utility

The South St. Paul City Council established a street light utility effective January 1, 2009. This utility maintains and operates a city-wide street lighting system. Because the system benefits all properties in the city, the City Council declared that the costs of operation and maintenance should be shared fairly among all properties.

In October 2016, Xcel Energy converted the city's street lights to LED lighting, helping to reduce both electricity and maintenance costs. The upgrade was completed at no additional cost to the City.

Street Light Policy

A  Street Light Policy (PDF)  has been adopted to guide the placement, installation, type, maintenance, and operation of the city’s street and alley lighting system.
