Public Sidewalks
The City of South St. Paul is divided into five sections for the Sidewalk Repair and Replacement Program. This program aligns with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirement that all existing crosswalks have pedestrian curb ramps for accessibility.
Sidewalk Inspections and Repairs
The Engineering Department is responsible for inspecting sidewalks, managing repair contracts, and overseeing construction. High-traffic areas, such as those near schools and retail businesses, will be prioritized for inspection and repairs. Repairs will be identified through:
- City inspections
- Resident complaints
- Property owner requests
Criteria for Removal & Replacement
- Sidewalk panels with elevation changes that create a tripping hazard. If tree roots cause the issue, the roots will be ground down, and the sidewalk replaced. In some cases, the tree may need to be removed.
- Sections of sidewalk that are broken or missing.
- Sidewalk panels with hairline cracks that are still structurally sound may be saw cut instead of removed to extend their lifespan.
