Fred Lawshe Park
Explore the rich history of South St. Paul at Fred Lawshe Park, located at the site of the City’s original City Hall (1890–1956). The park is situated at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 2nd Street at Grand Avenue, adjacent to the current City Hall.
The park honors Fred Lawshe, a longtime industrial arts teacher at South St. Paul High School who retired in 1958 after 40 years of service. Following his teaching career, Lawshe founded the Dakota County Historical Society and served as its first president. He later became the inaugural director and curator of the Dakota County Historical Museum, located across the street from the park.
Until his passing in 1971, Fred Lawshe dedicated himself to preserving local history—organizing collections, developing exhibits, and guiding student tours throughout Dakota County.
Whether you're walking or driving along Grand Avenue hill, Fred Lawshe Park offers a peaceful place to pause and reflect. It stands as a living tribute to a pioneer of local history and community heritage.
