Transportation & Logistic Advantages
Interstate Connectivity
South St. Paul offers excellent interstate connectivity, with three interchanges on I-494 and three interchanges on U.S. Highway 52. Nearly the entire Twin Cities metro is accessible within a 30-minute drive (see map). Additionally, businesses in South St. Paul benefit from one-day hauls to major cities and ports, including Chicago, Duluth, Omaha, Kansas City, and Milwaukee.
Air Travel & Aviation
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is less than 20 minutes from South St. Paul, offering daily direct flights to 155 global markets.
St. Paul Downtown Airport (STP), also known as Holman Field, is located less than 10 minutes north of South St. Paul. As a reliever airport for MSP, STP features three runways, including a primary 6,400-foot runway, and handles over 64,000 takeoffs and landings annually. It is the metro area’s main facility for private business aviation.
South St. Paul’s Municipal Airport, Fleming Field (KSGS), offers a 4,000-foot by 100-foot runway for general aviation, along with land and building lease opportunities for aviation-related businesses. The terminal includes free Wi-Fi, private meeting spaces, a full-service flight planning room, and a comfortable observation area.
Railroad Connectivity
Union Pacific (UP) operates a Class I railroad running north-south through South St. Paul’s BridgePoint Business Park and paralleling Concord Street (TH 156) along the Mississippi River. This mainline extends south to the Gulf of Mexico and connects north to BNSF and CP lines in downtown St. Paul, providing access to rail service across North America. UP also maintains a switchyard and office within South St. Paul.
Mississippi River Commerce
South St. Paul is adjacent to the Southport Terminal, a 119-acre river port owned and managed by the St. Paul Port Authority. Southport is a key heavy industrial district that depends on river access for freight shipment and plays a significant role in the area’s designation as a “working river.”
Transit
Public transportation in South St. Paul is provided by the Metropolitan Council’s Metro Transit Service. Routes 68 and 71 offer regular service between Inver Hills Community College, downtown St. Paul, and northern suburbs.
