The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has postponed the full closure of Interstate 494 between Blaine Avenue and Babcock Trail in Inver Grove Heights. Originally scheduled for May 8–12, the closure will now begin at 10 p.m. on Friday, May 16, and continue through 5 a.m. on Monday, May 19, weather permitting.
During the closure, I-494 will be closed in both directions, along with all ramps connecting Highway 52 to I-494. Crews will demolish the southbound Highway 52 bridge and associated ramps.
Detour routes during the weekend closure:
Westbound I-494: Use northbound Highway 52 → Mendota Road → southbound Highway 52 → westbound I-494
Eastbound I-494: Use southbound Highway 52 → eastbound 70th Street → northbound Highway 52 → eastbound I-494
Additional ramp closures begin May 15:
Starting at 5 a.m. Thursday, May 15, the following ramps will close and remain closed through 6 p.m. Monday, July 21:
This work supports the larger effort to redeck and repave the Highway 52 bridges over I-494. After May 19, traffic will shift to head-to-head configuration on the northbound Highway 52 bridge between Upper 55th Street and Mendota Road/Southview Boulevard. Ramp closures will remain in place until July 22.
The full project, which includes redecking and repainting both Hwy 52 bridges over I-494, is expected to be completed in November 2025. MnDOT is using federal funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) to advance this work.
